SECULAR CELL PHONES
I think itıs a great idea to have simple basic cell phones which only make and receive calls. If these phones are sponsored by religious groups, I see nothing wrong with subscribers receiving spiritual reminders or thoughts if they wish to receive them.
The modern cell phone has become a mini computer with internet connection, digital camera, digital images, games, text messaging, and global satellite positioning. And we can expect many more innovations.
To be a Christian means to follow Christ and his advice to practice a certain poverty according to our status in life. ³Do I really need to buy this or is there a better way to spend my money?² We need to avoid becoming victims of consumerism. Perhaps using a basic religious phone would be spiritually beneficial.
Using a ³secular² phone which has text messaging, phone calls, video music and games can consume a lot of time which probably is needed for study, homework and family conversation.
Besides wasting much time these phones can be very expensive. Many teenagers have monthly bills of fifty dollars or more.
Pornography on the internet is also an ever increasing problem. It is very harmful and can easily become addictive – just as addictive as alcohol or drugs. We must never allow ourselves to become enslaved by any bad habit.
