THE DA VINCE CODE MOVIE

Mark Twain once remarked, ³A lie is halfway round the world while the truth is still putting its boots on².  Discrediting Christian beliefs is nothing new.  Scripture itself (Matthew 28: 11-15) recounts the fact that religious authorities of the day paid off Roman soldiers to lie about the Resurrection of Jesus.  The movie version of ³The Da Vinci Code² perpetuates and promulgates misinformation regarding basic Christian beliefs.  The uninformed movie-goer will digest the story without realizing where fact ends and fiction begins.

Recently I viewed a television network program regarding the main plot line of ³The Da Vinci Code².  Even so-called legitimate news programs distort truth when they begin reports with words like, ³According to some ancient legends Jesus married Mary Magdalen and traveled to France² or ³Scripture does not refute the possibility that Jesus and Mary Magdalen married and had children².  I sat in disbelief and watched an hour ³news² program built on unsubstantiated assertions no serious historian would hold to be true.  I realized this wasn¹t news at all but entertainment.

I would not recommend a boycott of the movie.  Boycotts are often counter-productive.  I do believe this is an opportunity for Christians of all denominations to clarify both scriptural and historical realities to their congregations.  If this movie leads more people to participate in Bible Studies and classes regarding Church history then the result can be very positive.  Unfortunately, most of those who have read the book and those who will now see the movie will never seek the real truth!
