A study of more than 5,000
leaders in Conservative Judaism commissioned by the Jewish Theological Seminary
found that about two-thirds of the movementıs leaders favored the ordination of
gays. What are your thoughts about
the ordination of gay men and women?
Is this study significant to you in the context of your own faith?
In the Final Judgment
described in Matthewıs Gospel (25:31-46), Jesus reminds us quite emphatically
of what is necessary to be worthy of the Kingdom of God. ³For I was hungry and
you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me,
naked and you clothed me. I was
ill and you comforted me, in prison and you came to visit me.² When Jesus speaks of morality in the
Gospels it is almost always in terms of the poor and social justice. Are we called to live chastely whatever
our state of life? Absolutely! Do I think Jesus would deny individuals
the privilege of ministerial service due to sexual orientation? Not in the least. It is interesting to me that we spend so
much time concerned with sexual morality which Jesus spoke little of and too
little time concerned with the morality of justice and peace.
